Follow Me Friday

Alison Can Read Feature & Follow

This is the day of the week where we get to know each other better by answering a question devised by our lovely hostesses Parajunkee & Alisoncanread. We also gain new followers by joining each other's sites via GFC, so please let me know if you're a new follower. And now for this week's question....

Q.  What is your guilty pleasure as far as reading?  Is it a genre, or a certain type of book?

A. I suppose my guilty pleasure is young adult books. Yes I know a lot of you out there would be surprised by this answer.  But I have discovered that people who don't read a lot don't really think of young adult books as literature that is good.  Take this blog post for example by Bernard Beckett on Writing Teen Novels.  He says:

"I certainly wouldn’t argue that teen fiction can’t be great literature (I have my favourite counter-examples), but I would argue that mostly it isn’t. What’s more, I think this is perfectly predictable, and shouldn’t be viewed as some sort of failing on behalf of the YA writer."

I find sometimes that I am making excuses as to why I read it... but then again why should I be?  Sometimes young adult books are just filler but some are amazing and really well written.  Do you have any examples of YA books that you think are wonderful literature?

What are your guilty pleasures?  Leave a link so I can check out your FF post!!

  3. Well that almost gets to the point where these professional type people or whatever say all non classic books are crap. That only the classic books from 100s of years ago are literature. Which fine we can say that, but I disagree with everything else being crap.

We're in a different time, this in the 21st century and grand literature that we read in high school almost becomes just that, something we have to read. True there are people who still enjoy reading teh classics and that's totally fine, not arguing that literature if crap or anything really.

It's all about your own idea of literature I guess. But the authors of today still work their butts off to give us these amazing and fun reads that take you on an adventure. Whether YA or adult.

For the most part I think our books today are about escaping. Escape from our own life and go into someone else's, whether its a paranormal read or a contemporary read. And sometimes we do even learn a thing or two, but it's not so much for educational purposes. At least that's how I see "literature" as something for educational purpses.

Fiction and all its subgenres are for pleasure!

I think I typed that all about right. Hard to type and keep up with my thoughts on such a topic!

  4. Hopping through. Even though I read mostly YA, I still make excuses for it. I've been trying not to do that.

  6. Hmmm I would have to agree with you. I heard that many authors look down at YA authors and view them as theyy are not equal. But I still love YA books and some of them are my favorite reads.
