Ender's Game Movie Review

It's been a few years since I've read Ender's Game.  6 years in fact.  I love that book so much though.  I didn't ever read past the first book in the series... though my husband has read them all.  We have been talking for years about there being a movie based on the book.  I remember reading about many attempts at making it but failing.  I am glad it didn't get made until now.  This movie needs a lot of CGI.  I think it was made at the right time.... had this been made in the past it would look like that crazy movie Tron (the original) and though most people love that movie I was totally confused.  Now the remake I get.

Back to Ender...I do think there was a lot in this movie.  To put that entire book into this movie was a big undertaking.  I suppose too if you haven't read the book you would probably think this movie is going to be all about aliens... it's not.  This book/movie is supposed to be about the dynamic of the group of kids put together and made to become military members.  This is not a new story.  This has been done many times... most recently I read about it in the The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey... kids becoming military.  So it's hard to bring that type of comradery to the screen.

Otherwise I thought this was a fun film.  I did see it in IMAX and thought it was worth it.  I even got dizzy a few times in shots from space.  The movie does follow the novel to me pretty well.  There were a few stories left out of the movie but that had to be done.  I hear that Card is writing another Ender's Game novel that will follow right after this book. This is because the 2nd book that is out now takes place way after Ender's Game.

I think I will give this movie 6 stars out of 10.  It is a really fun movie and great for an escape but the story does go super fast.  And of course.. who doesn't want to see Harrison Ford???

  1. I've read great reviews for the movie. I was going to watch it but then my bank account was "compromised" and now I don't have money :-(
I haven't read the books and I'm not planning to, but will definitely watch the movie.

    1. Oh no! That sucks. I think this will be a good movie to watch at home but really with the CGI should be seen in a theater. So I am sorry you won't be able to go!

  2. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie! I agree that the film would not have worked if it was made a long time ago. The graphics would have been horrible. And the original Tron ... I can't even watch that movie! It's so cheesy. But I love the remake for Tron :DD

  3. I'm hoping to see this movie soon, I loved the book and I also haven't read any of the sequels! The first was just so good, I didn't feel the need to know more about it, which is odd since I'm usually very into sequels! :) I am glad you enjoyed the film, I hope I feel the same!

    1. I was the same way. The first book is actually a stand along and then the rest of the series follows Bean. So now that there will be a second one about Ender I might just read that one.

  4. I'm not all that interested in this movie/the series- I did try reading the first book, and got through about 30 pages, but it didn't pick up in that time, for me, and I just felt flat whilst reading it, so I decided not to continue. I do like some of the actors in the film, though not enough to want to see it if the trailer doesn't interest me, which, unfortunately, it doesn't. It would be interesting to see Harrison Ford in this, though!
Sorry it wasn't higher than a 6, but glad you enjoyed it!

    1. Yeah... this is how I feel about Vampire Academy. I haven't read the book... but when I saw the trailer I was kind of like eh.... doesn't even look good. So I won't go to the theater to see that movie.

  5. Harrison Ford is the best! I very much agree :) If they had made this without all that CGI it would have lost some of it's magic. Nice review. Glad you liked it

  6. Loved your review. I really want to see this movie and after reading this I want to go right now. I just read the book a month ago so I can't wait to compare the two and see what was left out.

  7. Sounds like Ender's game was almost an answer to your post - Better movie than book - almost!
