Comic Adventures Issue 1

I read a lot of comics and rarely review them here on the blog. That's because I really don't have a lot to say for an entire post.  So I thought I would review several comics on one post.  I will still review graphic novels on their own now and then, but this is where I will talk about super-hero type comics (DC/Marvel) or sequels to some that I have already reviewed.

This week I've read The Culling:  Rise of the Ravagers which is a New 52 and apart of the Teen Titan story line. I read Oz: Ozma of Oz which is the third book in the Marvel Oz series, Fairest Vol. 1. which is a spin off from the Fables series.  And last I read Wonder Woman vol 3 also apart of the New 52 by DC.

Let's start of by talking about The Culling: Rise of the Ravagers.  Honestly I only picked this one up because after reading Teen Titans Vol 2  I realized I had missed something.  I discovered that The Culling falls in between Teen Titans Vol 1 and Vol 2. So of course I went back and found this comic. I enjoyed seeing the Teen Titans and the Legion Lost team up against Harvest.

Next up I read Oz: Ozma of Oz.  I read the first two graphic novels my Marvel a few months ago when I did an Oz month on my blog and really loved them.  The art style is pretty amazing for one thing.  So whimsical.  What I really love about these is how close the author stays to the books.  So ... I have only read the first Oz novel by Baum but these graphic novels keep the series going perfectly.  This book is about Dorthy going back to OZ ... and meeting back up with her team of friends. We get to visit with Ozma again and meet a lot of new and neat characters.  Including a funny chicken. So fun!

I love love the series Fables.  So when I heard there was a spinoff called Fairest I was IN!  This series seems to be about all the ladies in the Fable world.  So this story is basically about the Snow Queen and Sleeping Beauty.  I THOUGHT that I needed to read this because I thought it occurred in the time line before vol 13 but actually it isn't until after vol 16.  So I was a little confused but luckily it is decent enough to be a stand alone volume.  I won't read the other Fairest yet though till I get father in the Fables universe.

Finally this week I read Wonder Woman vol 3 from the new 52.  I love this Wonder Woman series sooooo much.  Really it is fun fun.  It really brings in a lot of mythology characters so we get to meet all the gods and see them in modern day.  This is still not my favorite art work in the DC world... but the story line makes up for it so I don't mind at all.  I really think it's a good arc and a great story about Wonder Woman.

Well this is week one of Comics @ Angela's Anxious Life.  I already love it so far because I just love comics but don't really want to write an entire post about them.  Plus I read like 4 or 3 a week and never talk about them so this is perfect!!

  1. yes more comics please! This last year I have really found a love for Graphic Novels and am always looking for recommendations for new ones. I just purchased Fairest, but I think I will hold off until I am caught up in the Fables series. I will definitely be hunting down the Oz ones!

    1. Glad I saved you from reading Fairest out of order. It wasn't really bothersome because it's a new story. But I was confused as to why The Snow Queen and Sleeping Beauty were in the land they were in.

    2. I am only on Vol. 3 of the Fables so I think I would be pretty confused. It will take a while to get caught up I think since I have to purchase all my GN, my library doesn't carry them :(

    1. Honestly I am surprised by how much I love the Fables comics. I just love fairytale retellings so they are perfect.

  4. Very cool! I have to be honest: I've never read an actual comic as much as I love the movies :). I've read a few manga (and then had to go look up the animes), which I'm guessing are kind of like comics. The Wonder Woman story sounds really interesting; I'm a sucker for Greek mythology. Plus, just that cover of Ozma was beautiful. Nice post!

    1. I should try Manga. I think it's a little longer then a comic and an entire page is illustrated in one image instead of several. Also.. I think in Manga you read from the back of the book to the front. Though I could be totally wrong. :)

  5. Are you picking up the new Sandman series?

    1. You are going to be shocked but I haven't read the Sandman series. I gave it a go once... but it didn't pull me in. I think I only read one issue though and didn't give it a big enough chance. Now that it is going to be a TV series I really should try it again. I think maybe I just wasn't in the mood. That happens sometimes with books for me. I'll go back and try the book again and love it!

    2. I loves me some Sandman. I was going to say if you enjoy Fables, you'd probably dig that one, too. I like both, but I got into Sandman when it was still a monthly comic. It's tough to gauge how it'd hit me now if I was seeing it for the first time.

    3. Yea... It is a huge volume that my library has. I guess it would be called a compendium right? Like that is also why I haven't read the Walking Dead comics yet either. The library has compendium vol 1 so it is a huge hardback. I wish they had them in smaller volumes. I like to read a volume of a comic in a hour or so and them move onto a book.. then I'll read a couple graphic novels and go back to a book. When I have to read all those comics at once it is a little overwhelming.

    4. I think the Compendium or Omnibus is either the whole series or a huge chunk of it, I hear you. They should all be available in the tpbs, but maybe they went out of print. I got mine as they came out and they collected 7 or 8 issues at a time - much easier to tote around and get through!

I just found out that issue 2 of the new mini-series Gaiman and JH Williams are doing (the first of which came out last month) isn't coming out until the end of February... I can't stand when comics-folks do that. So now, instead of waiting for issue 2 and looking fwd to it, I'm annoyed and will just wait for the trade. (I say that, but I imagine I'll find an excuse to head to the shop come end-of-February... I know myself!)

    5. LOL! I used to do that with the Dark Tower comics. At that time though the comic book store was far away. So then I got tired of going there and started waiting for the trades. Then I got cheap and really started waiting for the library to get the copies. Have you heard of Netgalley? (if not stop by their website and sign up!) I go there and usually get comics before they come out expect the DC comics. They never approved me for any issues ... pisses me off really. I mean... who is getting approved for these???

  6. To the earlier comment-you have to try manga, Angie.
The Wonder Woman comic looks so cool, I really need to read some more DC, instead of just Marvel :)

    1. Ozma's artist is so fantastic that I would hang prints in my house as art. It really it just amazing. Fairest is fun too... though I had to put the series aside while I catch up on the rest of the fables series.
