Book Club August Picks

Looking for someone to discuss a book with? Some of you may know I run two book clubs on Goodreads.  One is the Young Adult Book Club and the other is the Stephen King Fans group.  Both groups are open to everyone.. so be sure to stop by and join us.  We have just started our August discussions so it is the perfect time for you to stop by.

This month for the Young Adult Book Club group we are Discussing Beauty Queens by Libba Bray.  Honestly I am glad we are reading a stand alone book.  I have read so many series lately it's a nice break.

The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner. What's a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up? Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Your tour guide? None other than Libba Bray, the hilarious, sensational, Printz Award-winning author of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Going Bovine. The result is a novel that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you never see beauty the same way again.

In the Stephen King Fans group we are reading a book the group would recommend to Stephen King. They chose The Time Machine by HG Wells.   I love that we are reading a classic this month!

So begins the Time Traveller’s astonishing firsthand account of his journey 800,000 years beyond his own era—and the story that launched H.G. Wells’s successful career and earned him his reputation as the father of science fiction. With a speculative leap that still fires the imagination, Wells sends his brave explorer to face a future burdened with our greatest hopes...and our darkest fears. A pull of the Time Machine’s lever propels him to the age of a slowly dying Earth. There he discovers two bizarre races—the ethereal Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks—who not only symbolize the duality of human nature, but offer a terrifying portrait of the men of tomorrow as well. Published in 1895, this masterpiece of invention captivated readers on the threshold of a new century. Thanks to Wells’s expert storytelling and provocative insight, The Time Machine will continue to enthrall readers for generations to come.

OMG, I've been wanting to read Beauty Queens by Libby Bray as everyone who've I've across that has read this book likes it.... But I'm a tad over committed this month with two other book club reads.... Otherwise I'd join in as I just became a member of Goodreads a few days ago.

  4. I still need to read Beauty Queens! I bought a copy, but sometimes I have a difficult time reading my OWN books, you know? And sometimes reading a classic is great, especially if it's not for school.

  6. I like it so far.. different from anything I've read. It's an older book though so sometimes the group doesn't get as much participation for those.

  7. Yes I KNOW! Only because I use the library so much MY books that I bought get pushed to the side. It's kind of sad actually.

  8. I swear .. book clubs can take up a lot of time. I usually only participate in the YA book club since the King one has a lots of members reading a long and they keep the discussions going. In the YA one usually I have to get the conversations going in the right direction.

  11. I have a copy of The Time Machine on my shelf right now, though I don't know if I'll get to it, even though it's tiny, until the Summer holidays over christmas, because I've just got so much on already. I need to really get through some books!

I hope you really enjoy Beauty Queens! I think you really might, actually, and I hope to see a review!

  12. I didn't know that The Time Machine is a short book. That is good to know. I have been wanting to read this for a while so I might just fly right through it.
