Guardians of the Galaxy- Movie Review

This is the movie I had been waiting for all year!  I didn't really think there were any huge hits this summer, other then Captain America. So I had really been anticipating this film.  I even ran out and read the Guardians of the Galaxy comics real quick before the film was released. The movie did NOT let me down.

I of course went opening night and saw it in 3D in IMAX.  The 3D was worth it.  This is a movie about a team of unlikely Superheros who join up together as a group only to help each other make money.  They become a group though nothing turns out how they plan.  The teams includes Gamora who is an assassin and the daughter of Thanos for those who read comics, Drax the Destroyer who is all muscles, Rocket a crazy raccoon who goes out and collects bounties on people, Groot who is a walking tree, and the star of the movie Peter Quill who is just your average Earthling. Each of these characters brings something unique to the team.

The most unique thing about this film to me is the humor. Yes, humor.  That is rare in these superhero films of today.  There are some jokes but most superhero films are very serious. This film is HILARIOUS.  It is a breath of fresh air.  There is even an 80s soundtrack to the film (which you probably heard in the trailer for the movie) that really makes the film enjoyable.  I also like that there were also heartwarming parts to the film.  You really get to travel with this team as they dislike each other and then really become friends.  No cheesiness to me either.

I was disappointed in the added scene at the very end of the credits.  All Marvel films typically have this (which is why you never see people leave a Marvel film until the bitter end). This time the end credit really had nothing to do with future films, or well anything.  It did have something to do with a character in the Marvel universe but still it fell flat and made me wish I hadn't bothered staying.  Just google it.

Really this is a great great film.  I recommend everyone seeing it.  I do hope this to be a successful franchise that can stand on it's own. For those who have seen the film Entertainment Weekly has a great article on it, though full of spoilers for the film so beware. It has interesting theories on a few topics. Have you seen the film?? What did you think?? I give this movie an A+.

  1. Glad you liked it! My oldest saw it last week and LOVED it. She now wants a raccoon but has been informed that's not happening and I doubt her dorm would go for it either! I like that it's funny as well as an adventure so I'm looking forward to watching it!

  2. I wish I'd seen this over the weekend. We opted for LUCY, and it was TERRIBLE.

  3. I have actually seen video with people who have raccoons as pets. While they are cute.. they are also destroy everything!! I kind of also want one to be honest. LOLOL!

  4. Ughhh that stinks about Lucy. I wondered about that movie. It looked like an interesting concept. Now you will have to go and see Guardians this weekend.

  5. Rocket is a cool character and Bradley Cooper who does the voice is good. I was afraid I would be able to recognize Cooper's voice but I didn't have any issues with that. How fun that this was your first comic book!! I love it!! I also am excited about seeing you over at JC's Book Haven!

  6. Lol my sister and I stayed through all of the credits because I thought the same thing you did. My sister just wanted to leave but I made her stay :P Totally not worth it haha. The humor was great for this movie though! I told my mom she has to see it soon since she loves 80's music =)

  7. I am taking my mom to see it this weekend. She is in town visiting and I think she would really enjoy it too. PS I've been waiting to see this blog design added to your new chapter designs website!!

  8. I'm so excited for this movie, I'm glad it didn't disappoint! The humor really appeals to me too - I can enjoy an action movie, but making me laugh is always better than wowing me with special effects. :) I feel like they are going in the right direction with superhero movies lately. I need to gather my friends to watch this soon!

  9. I'm with you on Googling that end credit scene. That was so stupid. I loved the humor though, this movie really was hilarious.

  10. I wasn't familiar with Guardians before, but this movie is a great introduction. Loads of fun and yeah, very funny! Now I gotta find my old mix cassettes and Walkman!

  11. Love this! I agree about the bonus scene. I was very disappointing but the movie was excellent! I LOVED it! I want to go see it again :)

  12. My mother-in-law knew someone who had one and she agreed to watch it one morning. She said it was complete chaos. Apparently it's like watching a very agile 2 year old. It was constantly opening cabinets and drawers and emptying them. She said she was more exhausted when it went home after a couple of hours than she'd been after a week with both her boys.

  13. I totally loved the humor!!!!

  14. I don't think I will be able to avoid this one, despite the fact it has been almost two years since I was in a theater. Do you read the comic by any chance?

  15. Annnnd I just saw your post about the Guardians, lol. The only character in the series I know is Drax because I read the Annihilation Saga back in the day, but I did love him in that resurrection.

  16. I really enjoyed this film as well..especially the AWESOME soundtrack!

  17. I must admit this was one superhero movie that I'm not all that excited about. I love the actors but I'm just not into it from the trailers. I will have to rent it when it comes to Blu-Ray. I'm so glad it is good though. Great review.

  18. I'll bet this was awesome in IMAX. I saw it the other day and loved it- which surprised me. I was expecting to not like it. The humor was great though, totally agree. The end credit scene was lame- o, though.

  19. I laughed so hard during this movie. It was fantastic.

  20. Oh wow!! That is so interesting to me. I always wonder what it would be like to have a ferret as a pet too. Some people say it's like having a cat but I just can't believe this!

  21. It was so good. I wanted to take my mom this weekend but we didn't get to go.. wasn't enough time during her visit. I just hope it's just as funny the second time around. Sometimes I think when I am really excited for a movie it might be really good and then the next time I see it it's not as good. This happened to me way back with XXX with Vin Deisel. I watched it in the theater and loved it, watch it at home and was bored.

  22. I just read that there is going to be a new comic with spoiler: Howard the Duck. I just never cared for that character so I am not even excited at all.

  23. It made me so nostalgic for the 80s! The music was just so spot on. I really liked the opening with Quill and him using the little aliens as microphones. Just so hilarious. I thought it was a lot of fun and from the reviews I see a lot of audiences like it.

  24. After such a great movie... I thought the ending scene was going to be epic. I suppose if you are a fan of that 80s movie and that comic character then those people were excited by it.

  25. Spot on! Everyone in the theater was just bursting out laughing.

  26. LOLOL! You need to go into a theater and see this. It is pretty amazing.. especially if you like comic book movies. The comics are pretty good though so I wouldn't avoid those either. They have humor like the movie.. though not as funny.

  27. I love all the love the movie is getting

  28. It has been getting so much love from critics and fans alike. The kind of humor though you see in the trailer is what you will find in the film. So if that isn't up your alley then renting is a good idea. Though.. I suspect you might really like this one.

  29. This was great in IMAX. I don't really love to spend money on IMAX prices.. it is almost $15 a person now where I go to the movies. This one was worth every penny.

  30. What I like is that even though this isn't marketed as a comedy, it was one of the more funny films I have seen in a long time. Honestly.. it was as funny as Shrek 2 to me!

  31. I do like a little humor in my superhero movies. We will rent is definitely and I'm sure you are right. I will probably enjoy this.

  32. Isn't that soundtrack amazing? I had to buy it the moment I left the theatre and I've been listening to it on my way to work each morning. And I totally agree that this film was really hilarious in points (and I loved that the film didn't abandon its humor in the action sequences). Can't wait for number 2!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I didn't even think about buying the soundtrack!! I am guessing then that it has all the 80s songs on it??? YES!!! I thought it was a little bold of them to write at the very end of the film that there will be a Guardians 2 but I guess they just knew it would be successful.

  34. Sounds fun! Chris Pratt's career is really taking off, I'm a big fan of his work on Parks & Recreation. Looking forward to seeing him in Jurassic World next year!

  35. There are two versions - the orchestral stuff and then the Awesome Mix which recreates Quill's tape.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I didn't know exactly who he was until this film. So I am glad his career is taking off. I even heard he said that he was going to stay fit because he was getting more roles!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Can't wait to see it, really, I'm excited !

  38. That is awesome you saw it in 3D and IMAX! We saw it in the regular version because my husband is so blind, he can't see in 3D very well, lol. ;) I'm glad you loved it. We did, too! At first when the raccoon came onscreen, I was like, "No way am I going to be able to sit through this." But I fell in love with the character and thought it could have been cheesy but definitely wasn't. Very well done.

Do you watch Parks & Rec? I've always loved Chris Pratt. Loved my daughter's reaction when I told her Gamora is played by the same actress who played Lt. Uhura in the Star Trek reimaginings. She's watched Into Darkness with me more times than I can count. :)

This summer is a lot different than last summer movie wise. Nothing really has stood out until this movie came out. I'm curious to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but don't like the way they look. I'll probably still see it and hopefully get used to them looking differently. Michael Bay must have a thing about changing the looks of my favorite characters into something freaky like he did with Transformers. And Megan Fox was great in Jennifer's Body but WHY does she have to be in TMNT?? Why?

  39. I forgot to mention that the soundtrack for this flick kicks all kind of a$$!! LOVED IT!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love that the Soundtrack is a good one. I know a few people who can't really watch 3D movies. I also know people who can't watch IMAX movies because they get dizzy and sick. Sooooo that is a bummer for them. I actually don't watch Parks & Rec. But clearly he is a funny guy so I bet he is funny in that show too. I should check out a few episodes. I have seen the movie twice now. I went again last night since our theater does cheap tickets on Tuesdays. But that is it for me... I won't see it again until video.

  41. I went with a friend and my daughter to see Into Darkness in 3D and IMAX, and it was just AMAZING!! I'm sad my husband can't see in 3D - he missed out on an epic experience. :P Chris is great on Parks & Rec! Admittedly, we haven't watched this season - too busy bingeing on Buffy, lol.

  42. Well the one thing about NOT seeing a movie in IMAX is that you don't have to pay those outrageous prices. Holy Smokes IMAX 3D is so expensive!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I was completely underwhelmed by the post credits scene too.

And I really liked that this was a funny movie. But I went to see it with my young nephews so I was really aware of how specific the humor is. So much of it was just over their head because they didn't get the cultural references. It'd be interesting to see if it's the sort of movie that is still appreciated in 10 or 20 years by a new set of viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I didn't even think of that. I have seen it twice now.. and the second time I didn't think it was as funny. Probably because I had seen the jokes already and knew what was coming. Still an enjoyable experience.

  45. An exhilarating delight-a tongue-in-cheek, big-budget sci-fi blockbuster that could easily be this generation's Star Wars.
