The Lego Movie-Video Game Review

As some of you may know who follow the blog that I love Lego video games.  They are really quite enjoyable.  There is running around.. collecting and building items.  I wasn't actually planning on playing this one because typically a game based off a movie just isn't any good.  They are usually rushed. So they graphics are bad.. the story line is bad. It turns out that my library started loaning out Xbox One and PS4 games and this is one of them.  So I said.. well why not.  I am so glad I took a chance on this game!

Turns out this game is just as fun as the other Lego games.  I was a little disappointed that the non-game scenes were straight out of the movie.  I mean STRAIGHT out of the movie.  I wanted those scenes to be a little more unique.  So I would usually just hit Y and skip those scenes since I've seen them before. What makes Lego games funny is that they reenact a scene from a movie in a funny way.  This one totally bypassed what makes Lego games great.  I liked the fact that you get to play as practically every single character from the movie.  You even get to dance to the song "Everything is Awesome" but pushing buttons (similar to the button pushing in Rock Band).

The game was a little glitchy too.  Which is another reason why games based off movies can be bad.  They are rushed out.  I hit one part where one of the characters I needed didn't appear.  I needed a character who could jump high and grab something and no matter what I did I couldn't get them to spawn.  It was annoying.  Eventually I googled it and found a way to get that character to appear by going to the character wheel and making them spawn that way.  It is so good there is that option because I was so far in the game there was no way I was going to start over.

Overall it was a fun game.  It wasn't that unique from the movie though ... I would recommend if you haven't seen The Lego Movie don't play this game.  Or you are pretty much going to see the whole movie. I give this game 7 out of 10

  1. My husband and I used to play Lego Star Wars together all the time but then life kind of got in the way and it's been one of the things that we've had to let go even though we've really wanted to try the Lego games that have been released since then. It's a good thing we're not playing now though or I'd be seriously conflicted about this one! I loved the movie but do I really want to do it all over again in game form? Plus glitches drive me absolutely insane!

  2. I love Lego games! I haven't played this one yet because like you said, I was wary about it being a movie game. I'll have to try it out!

  3. I agree. Games based off of movies usually suck. I was really disappointed in that Superman Returns and King Kong games.

  4. I love the Lego games!!! I have most of them for my iPhone but only a couple for my Wii. These games are always a ton of fin so I'm a little bummed this one was glitchy. Still this sounds like one I might want to try to grab if it comes to Wii and goes inexpensive. Great review.

  5. This looks great! I'm happy to hear you recommend it. I love the Lego games more than any other.

I agree, too - the cute way scenes from the source material (I'm thinking of the Lego Indiana Jones specifically, but all the others too) are a lot of fun. Too bad they opted for the straight-from-the-movie approach here.

I look forward to playing this one.

  6. Lego everything is THE BOMB! Well, except maybe games that are based on movies because I agree, they rarely turn out well. Glitches suck, and the non-uniqueness of the overall experience vs the film is disappointing, but not surprising. Still, 7/10 ain't bad!

  7. Ughhh the glitches in this game. It was still a lot of fun though. The next one I am going to play is Lego Hobbit. I can't wait to play that one too! I am super excited about it. It is too bad you and your husband don't get to play anymore. My husband and I used to play a lot too.. but he doesn't love it as much as I do so he doesn't play these games anymore.

  8. For being a movie game it is ok.. but that is only because it follows the Lego game format. So since it already has games to follow it is an OK game.

  9. I bet Redbox gets this one. They usually get the lego games and then you could rent it for like $2. My library had this one for free so that is why I played it. Free is Free. LOL!

  10. I love the scenes in the other Lego games.. especially BEFORE they had the characters talking. It would be so funny to see their expressions try to act out a movie scene. So dang funny. I miss those days but I suppose Lego had to get a little more advanced.

  11. Yeah it was fun to play. I suppose though it was cheaper and faster to just use the movie scenes as the cut scenes in the game. Still it was fun and that is what I look for in games.

  12. This looks like such a fun game! For some reason I hadn't even considered that it would be like the other lego games, but I'm thrilled to see it is, and it looks so nice in the animation sphere. The vividness of the film is something I loved more than anything else, and being able to go there in game seems really wonderful- I don't think I would particularly mind about it not being wholly unique from the film, though that does sound like a disappointment, because I just have so much fun with Lego games, and this seems like one I have to try!

  14. I didn't know there was a lego movie video game! I bet my boys would love it. And since they have seen this movie 600 times I bet they would like the scenes straight from the movie too :)

  15. Oh, that would be a lot of fun! I haven't played online games for years, but if I get a copy of this at some point, I'll be sure to try and connect with you!
