Tough Travels- Named Weapons

 Tough Travelling

“Tough Traveling” is a weekly Thursday feature created by Nathan at Review Barn where participants make a new list each week based on The Tough Guide to Fantasyland by Diana Wynne Jones. This hilarious little book cheerfully pokes fun at the most prevalent tropes in fantasy. All are welcome to take part, and there is a link up over at his site. Join in any time! This week’s trope is NAMED WEAPONS:

Surprise! This is not from the Tough Guide but fits the spirit of it well. So let us say for this topic the weapon either needs to be A. Named, B. Famous, or C. Sentient. Thanks to Mogsy for the idea!

I would like to get into more fantasy reading to be honest.  I just need to find some to read.
Some of the weapons I came up with:

Joe Hill wrote a graphic novel series called Locke and Key where keys are used and are magical.  The series is a mixture of horror and fantasy.  All the keys have different names. Shadow Key, Head Key, Animal Key... and so on.

Next up from the Percy Jackson books: Anaklusmos: The sword of Perseus Jackson, it was given to Hercules by the hesperide, Zoe. Made of the mythological metal Celestial Bronze. Its name in English means Riptide.

Excalibur from TH White The Once and Future King.  I have tried to get through this book twice.  I just can't it's so boring to me.  But Excalibur is a great sword.  I love the Disney film The Sword in the Stone.

Last I'll list Icingdeath & Twinkle Scimitar that Drizzt uses in the series by RA Salvatore.  I love these books and play Dungeons and Dragons weekly.

Next week is MISSING HEIRS
MISSING HEIRS occur with great frequency. At any given time, half the countries in Fantasyland will have mislaid their crown princess/prince.

  1. I so wanted to put Excalibur - but, I haven't read the book. I have seen a few different film versions though - perhaps that should count.
Plus IcingDeath and TwinkleScimitar - how good are those names!

  2. Oh, I have Percy's sword on my list as well. I like it that many of us included children's/YA novels in our lists!

    Mine's here: http://ofdragonsandhearts.com/2014/11/tough-travels-named-weapons/

And how cool are those keys?! Do they do anything specific?

  3. All I can think of now is Pookybear from the Angelfall series. Which doesn't fit in here with these serious names! :)

  6. I read a lot of YA novels so it fit perfectly on my list. Those keys do a lot of things! http://lockekey.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Keys that is a list... but for example there is a Gender Key where when you use it, it changes your gender. Or the Hercules Key which makes you Large. So fun!

  7. That's too bad that you don't know anyone who will play. It's nice to get together with friends for a few hours. We play once a week. It is pretty fun.

  9. This looks like a lot of fun. I think Anduril from Lord of the Rings (Aragorn's sword) comes to mind for me, can't think of any others off the top of my head other than Excalibur (the 80's movie of the same name is a favorite, or used t obe). Are you playing the new 5th edition?

  10. I am playing Pathfinder. I would like to play the 5th edition but right now we are in the middle of a Pathfinder campaign. The name of it is Rise of the Runelords if you are interested in looking it up. I love this little meme and plan on participating in it more.

  11. Oh what a great feature! I haven’t read the Diana Wynn Jones book, but it sounds so wonderful and I adore her work; I think I’ll appreciate this feature (which I hope you’ll partake in semi-regularly, at least!) even more once I’ve read it.

Icingdeath just makes me think of a iced cake-style sword, or a white, fluffy sword with decorations on it. That is, no doubt, very much not what I am supposed to think!

  12. I am going to try to continue to participate in this feature. I think it's fun and since I am a geek in more then just books for fantasy I am going to add in video games, movies, cartoons and whatever else I can think of. Icingdeath is HILARIOUS!!!
