Comic Adventures Issue #18

I read a lot of comics and rarely review them here on the blog. That's because I really don't have a lot to say for an entire post.  So I thought I would review several comics on one post.  I will still review graphic novels on their own now and then, but this is where I will talk about super-hero type comics (DC/Marvel) or sequels to some that I have already reviewed.

This issue covers Catwoman Vol 4 Gotham Underground, The Flash Vol 4 Reverse, Saga Vol 2, and DC Forever Evil.

So far I have really enjoyed the New 52 Catwoman series. This volume was good.. but not great.  I did think Catwoman was acting a little too nice and she is supposed to be a villain right?  Most of this volume took place under Gotham. There are a bunch of tunnels down there where there are three gangs trying to get control down there. We get introduced to some new characters including Joker's Daughter, real name Duela Dent.  Duela Dent apparently goes around pretending different super villains are her parents. The artwork in the Catwoman comics is still fantastic.  I think the next time I read this (vol 5) there will be a new writer on board so we'll see how that goes.  3 out of 5

I want to thank Edelweiss for giving me a review copy of this for free for my honest opinion. I was going to give up on the Flash after the last few comics. I didn't really care for Grodd and his gorilla army.  Dull.  But in this comic we get back to some good plots.  The story in this volume revolves around someone trying to kill everyone who is connected to the speed force. We even get to see Kid Flash who I love.  A little of his back story is revealed so I am assuming we will get to see more of this in Teen Titans.   We get to meet the villain Reverse-Flash.  Not I haven't read Flash prior to the new 52, but I know Reverse-Flash is pretty bad-ass. I would like to mention again like in all my Flash reviews the excellent art.  I love how the artists Manapul and Buccellato make the images seems like they are moving fast, even the titles of each issue.  I am actually looking forward to the next volume in the series.  4 out of 5

I am really enjoying the unique Saga story.  I love that the Daughter Hazel is still narrating this story about her parents Marko and Alana.  Bounty Hunters are still hunting them for having a mixed relationship between two races that are at war.  The bounty hunters have interesting stories of their own going on.  So I am conflicted.  I like both story lines going on so I can't decide who to root for. I still also like how adult these stories are.  There is sex, there is gore, there are... well huge genitals drawn out.  But it is done in a tasteful way which also surprises me. There are plenty of messages in this comic also.. which leads me to another thing I just love about Saga.  There are morals and messages!!!  What is loyalty?  What makes a great father?  What is the price of war?  Plus there is humor in these comics.  I just want everyone to read these and see just how much you will enjoy the mix of a great writer and a great artist go together. 5 out of 5

I saw a comic on Edelweiss (thank you for the free ARC to review!!) called Forever Evil and I had to get it.  I didn't realize I should've read Trinity War prior to it but that's OK.  I was able to follow along.  I did have Trinity War from the library but didn't get a chance to read it so I returned it and now I wish I had read it. Oh well.  I enjoyed this book. This book is about the Crime Syndicate who comes from Earth 3 to take over our world. Why?  Well because there is some evil thing that took over their world and now they need somewhere else to go.  While this is all good there were some odd plot holes in this arc. Dick Grayson seems to be really important to the Crime Syndicate but we don't know why.  There are actually quite a few unanswered questions now that I think about it.  So many in fact that I suppose I will have to knock some stars from this one.  3 out of 5
