This is the day of the week where we get to know each other better by answering a question devised by our lovely hostesses Parajunkee & Alisoncanread. Sounds like GFC is eventually going away.. so you may want to follow by email or bloglovin/feedly (I love both). And now for this week's question....
Q. Are there any book to movie adaptations where you think the movie is better then the book?
A. Wow... so I had to really think about this one. It was hard. There are two that I am going to pick. One is going to be a TV show and one a Movie. First up.. the Wizard of Oz. Not the new OZ movie (though I did enjoy that) but the Wizard of Oz movie . The book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is a good book, but the movie is much more magical. I love the ruby slippers, the different color horses, the music, I mean it is actually better then the book.
Next up we have Game of Thrones.. yeah OK so if you have actually read those books then you know that they are fantastic of course. BUT.. the show is pretty fantastic too. And much much shorter. HBO does a good job with books to shows I have found.. though the question is will George RR Martin finish the series before HBO does. I have actually stopped reading the book until the series is finished. I just can't take these games!
What about you? What do you think is better then the book?
Also.. I have a poll going about goodreads and it's bookclub if you want to stop by here and help out! Great discussions going about it.
Hopping through. Wizard of Oz scared me when I was a little kid. So much so that I've never been able to get through the entire movie again.ReplyDelete
WHAT! Ok that is an amazing story. I have never heard of anyone not watching the whole movie! Shocked!Delete
I so agree with you on the Game of Thrones tv series being better than the book (season 2 anyway) - or at the very least - just as good! I loved the books btw (well, maybe not all of them).ReplyDelete
Me too!!! Though.. maybe it's just because I hate waiting so long in between books. But now there is wikipedia which helps me remember previous books. When I first started reading it there wasn't wikipedia so I had to RE_READ those big books (though I do like big books and I cannot lie). :)Delete
The Wizard of Oz was my pick too, I thought the film was more captivating -- and those shoes!ReplyDelete
Have a great weeked.
Love the red shoes more then the sliver shoes. I think they do look pretty on film!Delete
Nice! My niece adores the Wizard of Oz. Going to have to get her the books when she's older!ReplyDelete
Here's my Follow Friday
Have a GREAT weekend!
Old Follower :)
The books are good.. I saw the whole set of Wizard at Costco for only $35.Delete
One of my favorites is Stardust. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not big on Neil Gaiman. But while it's not a very faithful adaptation, I feel like the movie took the best parts of the book and then made it even more magical.ReplyDelete
Also, The Princess Bride. It's hard to call it better, because they're both very good and I love them for different reasons... but I think just in terms of pure entertainment, I give the edge to the movie.
I love Stardust too... and Princess Bride. I like how someone is thinking outside the box. Most of the ones I've seen are Harry Potter and LOTR. I suppose those always come to mind first. Nice to see someone else like Stardust.Delete
I loved both The Song of Ice and Fire book series and The Game of Thrones tv series fairly equally. I haven't read the last book. Who knows when he'll get around to publishing a new one and it's hard to remember all the details from the previous books. Old follower. My FFReplyDelete
True... thank God for wikipedia. I have to have that when reading GOT!Delete
I'm going to go with The Dead Zone.ReplyDelete
You know... I tried to think of King's book that went well to the screen and that is hard. I haven't read the Dead Zone so I can't compare that. But I guess the Shining (mini series of course) does do a good job of putting that book to film.Delete
Tough question - it's very easy to choose books better than movies! The other way around, I'll choose Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire. Not that the book was vastly inferior, just the movie was more concise & might be my favourite film of the series!ReplyDelete
That is my favorite film also (of the series).. and you know it's my favorite book too. I actually did a re-read of the Potter books this past year and had such a good time. I think keeping the re-reads about 5 years apart is perfect.Delete
I've seen the Wizard of Oz one other time today and it makes me want to read the book to be able to make the comparison. lol I also actually brought up Game of Thrones because I can only imagine what the books are like if the show is THAT good. *swoon*ReplyDelete
Here's my #FF!
Melissa @Stalked! Reviews by Melissa
I didn't read the Wizard of Oz till just this year. It is a neat series. Very steampunk actually. The graphic novel series by Marvel just came out too and that is a pretty good retelling if you are just interesting in getting an overview of the books.Delete
Wizard of Oz, great pick! I LOVE Game of Thrones, the books and the Tv show, they are really amazing. New Twitter and GFC follower. My F&FF.ReplyDelete
GOT fans everywhere! Yeah!!Delete
I have yet to read The Game of Thrones series, but I absolutely LOVE the HBO series. Lol yes, George RR Martin really writes at a snail's pace.ReplyDelete
A snail... a slow slow snail. SNAIL!Delete
I will agree on the Game of Thrones. I just couldn't get into those books and barely finished the first one (I'm one of the very few who isn't a fan of the books). My wife really wanted to watch the show so we borrowed it from her sister and it is actually pretty good.ReplyDelete
I'm looking forward to borrowing season 3 after my sister-in-law watches it.
The books are hard. I actually started the first one in 2001 and DNF. Then in 2003 I gave it another shot and made it through and loved it. So it did take two tries for me.Delete
I have not watched these movies but will surely do so now..:)
This is my first Friday Feature and Follow participation and I am so excited..:)

Great post, Angela!ReplyDelete
I haven't read or watched Game of Thrones, though that certainly doesn't stop me from having a favourite character (Daenerys and Sansa), and I have also worn an Ayra Stark hairstyle before. It was a lot of fun!
I didn't enjoy the latest Oz movie very much, either- I thought it was, visually, quite amazing, but it felt a little too overdone, at the same time, and the plot wasn't all that fantastic, to my mind. I haven't watched the original in years!
(And I misspelt her name! Arya, not Ayra!)Delete
