Nook... will it go away?

I am sad that the Nook isn't doing too well these days.  I really don't understand it... why people don't just love the Nook and use the Kindle or other reading devices.  I love that I am able to go into a store and browse around and look at all the features .. plus have someone there to help me when I can't figure the darn thing out.  I have always found the staff nice and friendly.  The stores have made the Nook section fun... even though they are phasing out the Nook Color (which is the one I own) the Nook HD Tablet is a great piece of work.

I am sad to see what has been going on with the Nook lately.  Barnes and Noble has added Google Play to their Tablets which I think is a move in a good direction.  I can't play that on mine though since I have the outdated Nook Color.  I own an iPad though so I see no need to upgrade my Nook.  That is one of the problems I think the ereader market is having.  Microsoft was rumored to buy Nook from Barnes and Nobles but it looks like that fell through.

The Nook is fun... but I am sure all ereaders are.  I've been reading that the ebook market is slowly losing sales.  I don't always read ebooks.  I still love to have a real book in my hands.  It is so hard to get new ebooks at the library so I have to have real books because of this.  I wish there was more access for libraries to have new ebooks.

What about you?  What do you think of the Nook going away?

EDIT:  June 25th.. Barnes and Nobles have confirmed it will no longer sell Nook Color

  1. I definitely think it's sad because I've yet to own an e-reader! I'd hate for them to be practically obsolete when I finally get a chance to buy one. I don't know much about it but I suspect that Kindle is doing much better?

    1. The Kindle is doing much better. I am not really sure why either. I suppose it's because they came out with the Fire first, which is more of a Tablet, and this caused people to pick the Kindle. When I first got the Nook one of the main reasons was because you could check out library books on it and at the time you couldn't on the Kindle. Now the Kindle has fixed that even though I think you still have to go through Amazon's site to check out the book.

    2. I love my Nook. Im very upset about all this info...sad. i love barnes and noble. I like having bookstores and love the knowledge of B&N's staff. Hope the store survives.

  2. I'm more of a Kindle gal, but I do like how you can go into a store and look at the Nook and get some human feedback on it if you have questions. The newest Kindle is so pretty though (the paperwhite)!

I am surprised that ebook sales are going down, though maybe that's a good thing because I still want to have both physical and ecopies of books. Hopefully the market can find some sort of balance.

    1. I have seen a few blogs do a review on the paperwhite. Amazon sent them one for free to try out. One thing that bothers me and maybe why ebook sales are down is because of the price. It's hard for people to want to pay the same price for an ebook as a physical book. I think ebooks should be cheaper then a physical book myself.

  3. No, and I have the Nook HD+, I upgrade from the Nook original and I love that I can put the kindle app on it and use chrome. I do think they made a smart move with the upgrades.

  4. I love my Nook, I've had an original, Color, Tablet, and now the HD (which I just purchased the week of Mother's Day). Thrilled with having the Google Play store available, but I'll still try to purchase books from B&N first. My little way of saying thank you. I worked at B&N for several years while in college and they were so good to me as I built up my music studio, helped me slowly reduce hours there as I gained new students. So grateful, and that definitely adds to why I feel loyal to them. :)

    1. I love my Nook too.. and I love Barnes and Nobles. I just like how I feel when I go in there. I think they have set up a great atmosphere. Books are usually cheaper on Amazon so I buy my physical books on Amazon and my ebooks from B&N. One thing that ANNOYS me is that people can't use their B&N membership discounts on anything that has to do with the Nook. So now I don't even bother having a membership with them.

    2. I know, I hate that part, too. The membership just isn't worth it if you buy mostly ebooks. I have an educator's card since we homeschool, and lately the only physical books I'm buying are for that purpose. Works out well, and it's a better discount. ;)

  5. I have a Kindle Touch and love it (despite having no backlight). I think it is sad that Barnes and Noble's ereader is not do well and I've noticed the push every time I step into the store. Also, as to checking-out library books on Kindle, yes you are redirected to a download link on Amazon. I don't know what it's like on the Nook but I find that extra step annoying, but hey it's free.

    1. haha! Yes it is free... I wonder why the make you go to Amazon? With other ereaders including Nook you go to a site called Overdrive. Which is maybe the same thing you do now that I think about it... just Amazon is the host.
The backlight can sometimes be a problem when you are outside. If I do ever have to get a new reader it will be one that doesn't have a backlight and is more similar to a actual book.

  6. I hope the Nook doesn't go away. That's the ereader that my parents have and we share an account. I use a Nook app on my phone. I imagine it wouldn't go away totally - just be bought out by something.

    1. My mom has the Nook too and she and I share books. Though my sharing on it went bananas. I joined this group on facebook called Nookfriends. It's where we share email address so we can have more Nook friends. Well.. ok so I ended up with 600 friends!! And that totally crashed the Nook friend app on my reader and now it doesn't know what to do. So I deleted all my friend and what not .. but still buggy. It said the only way to fix this is by going back to factory settings but then I lose all my side loaded books. sigh. Moral of the story is 600 friends is too much for the system!!

  7. I ended up investing in one when I decided to get an ereader and I really like it. I think the main reason why people aren't getting them is because Amazon has far more books available AND for much better prices oftentimes. Whenever somebody posts about Kindle deals, I'll check B&N for the same books and the prices are only maybe 50% of the time the same. If B&N would be more proactive and match Kindle sales (and you know, have sales of their own), they might stand a better chance. *sigh* Oh well. I'm hoping it will all work out in the end because I enjoy reading books on my Nook. :)

    1. I agree about that.. I see a lot of blogs do posts about Kindle edeals. I also go and look at B&N and the price is way higher. I really never find any deals... though I guess I don't actively look either.

  8. Eep, my parents are going to have heart failure! After a lot of searching, they decided the Nook was a better investment than a Kindle. If the interest in the Nook is waning . . .

  9. I've a Kindle, so Nook going under wouldn't effect me. But yes, I'd be sad to see it go. I always root for the "underdog", plus I'm not a fan of Amazon.... I just <3 my Kindle #sorrynook

    1. It will be a bummer since now Amazon will clinch the market. That will be like a monopoly on ebooks.

  10. I'm out of the loop, I hadn't heard the Nook wasn't doing well, though I can't say I'm surprised. I doubt B&N made any money at all off of the devices, always having to compete with Kindle pricing, etc. I know it was about eBook market share, so it's a shame the Nook isn't doing well. I have the SimpleTouch with Glow Light and really like it!
