I really love to read fun graphic novels. This one is really fun... and even includes recipes!!! I am for sure going to try one. Here is the goodreads description:
A vibrant, food-themed memoir from beloved indie cartoonist Lucy Knisley.
Lucy Knisley loves food. The daughter of a chef and a gourmet, this talented young cartoonist comes by her obsession honestly. In her forthright, thoughtful, and funny memoir, Lucy traces key episodes in her life thus far, framed by what she was eating at the time and lessons learned about food, cooking, and life. Each chapter is bookended with an illustrated recipe—many of them treasured family dishes, and a few of them Lucy's original inventions.
A welcome read for anyone who ever felt more passion for a sandwich than is strictly speaking proper, Relish is a book for our time: it invites the reader to celebrate food as a connection to our bodies and a connection to the earth, rather than an enemy, a compulsion, or a consumer product..

I loved this book. It was a lot of fun to read about Lucy's life as she grows up and goes through college. I love how she remembers exploring different kinds of food. She got to travel the world as a child and eat all kinds of things. It made me want to try more and more food. As I have become older my tastes have changed and I love to try all kinds of food. The art in this book is fun too. She went to school to study art and this book shows it.
The stories in this book are hilarious like the one I have pictured above. Where her dad takes her to Italy i think and then Lucy heads over to McDonalds to eat and he is shocked. She talks about the junk food she eats and that even though it's bad for her she loves it anyways. This book makes me so hungry and the perfect thing about it is that it provides some RECIPES! Recipes for cookies to recipes for sushi (which I will never attempt).
Everyone can understand what she is talking about. She talks about a friend who only eats meat and potatoes..(um my husband) and she wonders how they can live like that. Lucy tells a story of a friend who cooked dinner for her (it was his first time cooking) and it was awful. They ended up ordering pizza. This reminded me of one night when I made homemade pizza for my husband.. it was such a disaster that we ended up ordering Pizza Hut. It was a great memory though and one we will always talk about. We even took a picture that night it was so crazy!
Really this is a great graphic novel and I hope to see more from Knisley in the future and I hope it's about food again!
The crystal ball says:
Sun is shinning!!! Great day to go outside and read this book.
This sounds so much fun. I don't read enough graphic novels but I love them. This is one I'd love to, plus there is food and recipes! Yay!
ReplyDeleteI need to try the recipes as soon as I get a chance.
DeleteI read Lucy Knisley's other graphic novel, French Milk, last year. It's basically about her trip to Paris with her Mum, but when I think about it there WERE an awful lot of food references, so clearly this was the next step for her.
ReplyDeleteThat was in black and white though, and it does seem to work a little better. I've had this one on my wishlist for a while now though and I'm looking forward to it :)
Oh I didn't know there was another one by Knisley. I will be checking this one out for sure now. I am glad that she is doing more then just this graphic novel. Good to hear.
DeleteThis sounds cute, and I'm going to keep an eye out for it!
ReplyDeleteIt's really cute... so glad I heard about it and checked it out.
DeleteI love that you included sample pages. I've read a few reviews for it but never seen inside. Thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteI always love to leave sample pages of a graphic novel so people can get a feel for what they look like. Sometimes it's the art that draws us in to read one!
DeleteThis sounds like a cool graphic novel! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is cool.. so fun!! Hoping to try some recipes next week.
