Comic Adventures Issue #15

I read a lot of comics and rarely review them here on the blog. That's because I really don't have a lot to say for an entire post.  So I thought I would review several comics on one post.  I will still review graphic novels on their own now and then, but this is where I will talk about super-hero type comics (DC/Marvel) or sequels to some that I have already reviewed.

This week I talk about Fables Vol. 15 Rose Red by Bill Willingham, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 2 by Alan Moore, Nightwing Volume 4 Second City, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Vol. 2 Origins of Eternia DC.

I am so close to being caught up on the Fables Comics!  I really love these and am sad that they are coming to an end soon. A lot of this volume looks at the back stories between Rose Red and her sister Snow White. I loved the whole wizard/witch duel between the Dark Man and Frau Totenkinder.  Some great writing there.  The Dark Man story gets wrapped up in perfect timing.  That is one of the things I like about these comics is that we don't get kept in limbo with a story line forever. There are also some interesting story lines started up in this volume.  Ozma will be the headed witch, Beauty and Beast's child is born and we get a quick peak at what the baby looks like. There are only 5 more for me to read in the series before I am caught up.  5 out of 5

I loved the first volume of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen so much.  I couldn't wait to read Volume 2!  Let's talk about the art by Kevin O'Neill.  I love it so much.. the detail in the images is spot on.  This issue has aliens in it!  We have pretty much a homage to War of the Worlds.  The League has to figure out how to defeat these huge machines.  So in this issue we get introduced to Dr. Moreau.  I have to say I was a little surprised at all the sex in this issue.  It is certainly not for kids or sensitive people.  There is not only sex but rape.  Brutal rape. There is a really long almanac at the end.  I started to skim it but didn't bother with it and am glad.  I looked on goodreads and it seems everyone reviewing this said the almanac was boring. This one certainly isn't as good as the first. 3 out of 5

I have really enjoyed the Nightwing series. I received this copy free from Netgalley and DC as an ARC.  Thank you to them for allowing me to read it and write a review.  I didn't love this volume though... I liked it more when Nightwing is mixed up with the Batman crew.  There were some things that worked though.. Nightwing moves to Chicago and completely leaves behind Gotham.  I do think if you are going to put him out on his own this is the way to do it.  Move him totally away from Gotham.  I am sure this is leading off to the new Nightwing comic that is supposed to come out after Volume 5 where I hear Nightwing will be some sort of detective. I like that this volume ties up the lose ends with the man who killed Nightwing's parents, the Graysons.  We can completely move away from that story line. I still love Nightwing and hope the rumors are true and he will end up in the CW TV series Arrow.  That would be great! 3 out of 5

I am still so happy that He-Man is a comic... I love He-Man so anything to keep his story going is great.  I loved volume 1 so much.  Volume 2 on the other hand is a little disjointed.  It doesn't carry on from volume 1 at all.  It is a mixture of stories... origins stories of different characters.  Each issues has a different artist as well (I loved the artist in volume 1). I did find Skeletor's origin story interesting since I have wondered why he looks the way he does.  I did look up volume 3 and that one looks like it is back to the same story throughout the comic.  Maybe they felt they needed to introduce all the characters before continuing on in the universe?  I am afraid this volume might turn readers off from He-Man and that would be disappointing.  2 out of 5

Well that's it for comics this time around... can't wait to read what comics come into the library next!!

I am now up to 62 books towards my Graphic Novel Reading Challenge!

  1. Nice reviews, I like that you cover a little bit of everything. I haven't read Fables but keep hearing how good they are. And He-Man... I remember that show, it's cool they are still doing He-Man comics. I keep saying I need to read some DC, I'm kinda curious about Birds of Prey and maybe Green Arrow, some of those characters. I'll have to hit the comic store soon!

  2. I love that fables cover. IF they are coming to an end soon that means I can binge read through them! I read the first two issues of Big Trouble in Little China over the weekend and was sorely not impressed.

I don't read many comics myself. But did hear this week that Marvel Comics is making Thor a woman!! What do you think about it?? It seems like a lot of people are up in arms about a woman in the role of Thor.

  6. Fables is really truly an excellent graphic novel. Whenever someone is looking to get into the comics/graphic novel world I suggest that series. Green Arrow is on DC comic I haven't picked up yet and to be honest I don't know why I haven't. I get all my comics from the library which is why I review them in volumes instead of issues. You should see if yours has them, then if you don't like a series you didn't waste your money on it.

  7. I don't think it's that big of a deal... of course I am not much of a Marvel reader. It will be odd and different at first and the movies won't follow suit. But I think it is great to add in women and minorities. Captain America is also changing to and African American man. I love it!

  12. I've heard that all the "young" DC superheroes are moving to that new town outside Gotham. Batgirl is when the new team takes over (I'm afraid i'm not going to like her anymore with the change. I certainly don't like her new look :-(. and I think I heard the Teen Titans are going to live there too (or they already do?). I had *such* a hard time not picking up the first issue of Grayson when I saw it come out, but I'm a trade reader, not a floppy reader LOL! I want that volume on my shelf too bad!

I love He-Man too! Will have to try and give him a read sometime.

  13. I don't like her new look either Nicola!!! I was just LOVING the look she has now. I didn't hear about this town. I don't know what to think.. just when I think I am caught up DC does a big switch and makes me have to figure everything out again. Well.. I am not one to not at least try so I will give all these new stories a try.
