Denver Comic Con - 2014

I attended the Denver Comic Con this weekend... for those that follow this blog you probably know I am pretty geeky.  I was actually going to skip it this year though.  I of course attended Denver's first comic con in 2013 and that was a disaster! So we said for sure there was no going back.  Why go there when we could save our money and go to the big San Diego Comic Con every other year (which we are attending this year FYI). But then there was the announcement that Stephen Amell was attended.  For those that don't know who he is.. he is the star of the show Arrow on CW.

So of course we packed our bags and headed up there.  I would like to say that this year Denver Comic Con got their stuff together.  We were allowed to wait in lines, no drama with the badges, it was really a much better experience.  I was able to attend the Oatmeal panel which was so freaking exciting for me.  I have a review of his book, How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill you which actually gets the most views on my blog.  Crazy I know.  The author Matthew Inman had some new material for the panel.. and trust me this panel was not for children.  He talked a lot about penises and sex (in nature) but people still brought their kids.  If you read the Oatmeal you know it is not for kids!

Right at the end of this panel was a panel with Max Brooks which I wish I could've attended but the two overlapped.  Also... we needed to line up for the Arrow panel sooo I had to make hard decisions. Which you end up doing at any con.  One of my favorite parts of Comic Cons is the "floor" where you walk around and see all the booths.  This year I didn't buy anything.  I was a lot more busy then last time so I just walked past everything.  There was a Weta booth (they make the weapon in Lord of the Rings) but I am pretty sure it is the same booth from San Diego Comic Con a few years ago. Still fun to see.

My husband was able to get Stephen Amell's autograph.  I wish I had a picture of him getting it.. but we have a brand new camera and I wasn't really familiar with it.  Soooo I didn't get one.  Such a bummer.

I love Comic Cons.  Watching all the people dressed up in costume is great..  there were a few bookish booths but I didn't really stop at any. I had swore off the Denver Comic Con but they did a good job so if there is a guest that's worth it next year I suppose I will go again. I will say Denver Comic Con is expensive though.  $40 for one day $60 for the three day.  San Diego Comic Con costs the same and it is literally 10 times bigger.  But I suppose for Stephen Amell I'll pay it. ;)  Fun times!

  1. The only conventions I've ever been to were IAAPA. (Theme Park convention) Oh how I miss those, not too many people get to go and they are fun!! I hope to go to a book one someday or video games one. I can hope. Glad your experience this time was better than last time.

  2. My friend is a Scentsy consultant and she goes to that one every year. She said it is super fun. I love that she sees all the new products and then gets to tell me about them.

  3. Sounds so much fun! I really need to get myself to a Comic Con soon!

  4. Especially if there is a local one in your state. Some of them have become pretty large.. Seattle's Salt Lake city has a big one. So fun!

  5. Glad to hear it went well this time! I went to Minneapolis comic con last month, and even though it was the first year, it was well done! I was on the fence about going until Nathan Fillion was a confirmed panelist. It was great. :) I tried to get tickets to San Diego, but alas, no luck. Have fun!

  6. Sometimes... it just takes one celebrity to get us to go right??? Truly though I love the whole geek culture. I liked too that both panels I went to, you could tell that they really liked what they do. Stephen Amell and the Oatmeal constantly interact with fans.. on say Facebook or Twitter. That helps them gain this fan base that they have and made it worth spending the $40 for the day.

  7. Stephen Amell was hot on the gay soap opera, Dante's Cove.

  8. That's great you had more fun this year. I would SO love to go to the San Diego Comic Con sometime though. :)

  9. Holy smokes he was totally hot on there... and still hot now. My husband got to pick which picture he wanted Stephen Amell to sign. You can see the one he picked above... this is the one I would've picked:

  10. I am so excited about that one this year!!

  11. It's excellent to hear you ended up enjoying it this time so much more than last year- that it was so unplesant the first time that you didn't want to go again is terrible, but that someone you admire so much went and you decided to go just for that, even though you hadn't liked it previously, and then to find you did enjoy it- well, that's fantastic! I'm hoping for a post on SDC when you've been to it!

  12. Jealous!! I've only been to one Con, and I want to do more so bad! I also want to cosplay, but I feel like I'd have to give up reading to do it.

  13. The Oatmeal would have been fun to see as well. But, children? Come on, people!

  14. The Oatmeal craaaacks me up. But yeah, not kid friendly!

  15. That's so cool! I haven't been to San Diego Comic Con in a couple of years - but it's the only one I've attended. I'd kind of expect the more regional cons to be less expensive - since I'm sure they don't have the same number of panels. But it sounds like it's still fun to go and check everything out. And Stephen Amell. That totally makes it worth it :)

  16. OH you know I will post about the SDCC. I am super excited about that one. I really need to get to walking and working out for that one. I was quite surprised at how much more enjoyable the Denver Con was this year. They really worked on all the mess. It is still quite expensive so I may or may not go next year.. that is of course unless they just happen to have someone great there.

  17. I hear the Salt Lake Comic Con is pretty amazing. In fact... I heard it was the 3rd best in the country. You will have to check it out when it comes through again!

  18. The Oatmeal is great. The guy kept talking about penises and there was this kid behind me who kept laughing... trust me. That kid didn't get the jokes at all, I am sure just the mention of penis is what was making that kid laugh. It was awkward for me .. but I guess since I am not his mom. His mom wouldn't even give up her seat at the beginning. She was sitting on the aisle (like me) and I could hear him telling her he couldn't see. She was really like tough. It was sad.

  19. Well... since you have been to the SDCC you will not want to go to a smaller scale one. Trust me. We went from the big con to a little con and it was like shock! LOL! The Denver Comic Con should in NO WAY cost the same as the San Diego one. It is outrageous actually. But obviously I paid that price to get in... you are welcome Stephen Amell!

  20. I felt that way about the SacAnime con here in my town. I paid $35 to go to that con and there wasn't practically anything. The panels didn't look good the vendor floor wasn't all that great and literally there just didn't seem to be much of anything good. Glad that it was worth it to you. I hope you have a blast at SDCC I'm still so jealous you get to go and I don't. I hope I can go next year if I can wrangle tickets *cries*

  21. As I live in Denver I've been curious about this. I didn't go (I had to work all weekend anyway), but I did see people walking around the city who must have been going....

I'm glad to hear it was better.

  22. I would totally go to a comic con for one actor! I'm glad you got to see him (and thank you for the reminder that I need to watch Arrow!) I haven't come across the Oatmeal before either - it's so much fun - just spent a few minutes on there clicking before I commented here. :D Great recap post Angie! I hope you get used to your camera when you go to SDCC! So you can take lots of close ups of the celebrities and authors! :)

  23. You know I have never been to a con before! I really want to go someday!

  24. You have to log in to get ticket to the SDCC like on the spot. We had three of us trying all at the same time. One of us got through and was able to do it. It really does take planning. Even the hotel we BARELY got. That is a whole different process that is hard to do also. We are staying at one that is on the shuttle route and that is important to make the day better. Wow.. I got all into SDCC talk instead of DCC! LOL!

  25. It was much better this time. If you live in the Denver area I am sure you heard all the complaints last year. Downtown is so fun to be in though during Comic Con. I mean... walking down the street with Darth Vader??? Nothing is better then that! Hopefully you can go next year if there is anything there that you are interested in.

  26. I am so glad you went to the Oatmeal website. I really enjoy those comics. I just tweeted you one of my favorite Oatmeal comics. One I think everyone should read. I can't believe I didn't get that picture... errrr taking a new camera to an event is not smart.

  27. They are really fun. I would love to go to BEA that is the next con I really want to go to. When it moves out of NY I will attempt to get there.

  28. Awesome! Did you dress up as anyone for the event? Love The Oatmeal, not only is he funny, but some of his comics apply to real life too (one of his recent one about how red velvet mites teach us about love is awesome!)! I look forward to his new book on long distance running out soon!

  29. Awesome! Sounds like you guys had a great time.

  30. I can't wait for his long distance running one too. I have done a few 5Ks and have felt what he is talking about. Some of his running comics are geared more for marathon runners but still relates to all of us who try to exercise. I did not dress up. I have thought about it once or twice but then thought it would be a waste of money so I just wear a superhero shirt.

  31. It was fun... we didn't stay that long though. Probably left about 330ish. We had really done everything we wanted to do by that time.

  32. That's so cool that you went to this. St Louis has now had two comic cons and I have missed out both times due to funds or work. I'm so jealous you are going to the San Diego one. I look forward to a post on that one.

Big fan if Arrow so that would have been a panel I wouldn't have missed either.

  33. Nathan Fillion was in Minneapolis?! How did I miss this?! I am so jealous. A.M., did they release dates for next year's Con? I live in Iowa and have family in MN so making the trek up there for Con is not out of the question.

Angela, it looks like you had a great time. I had never attend ICON until two years ago when I learned one of my favorite authors was going to be there. He came back last year so I went again. :) And this year, I'm on the planning committee.

  34. I'm not on Facebook but my wife is so I might hijack her account and check it out. Thanks for the info. I will also check out the YouTube videos of the panel.

  35. So neat that you are on the planning committee. I know that most of the people working at cons are volunteers so that is wonderful of you to help out. I myself wouldn't volunteer since I want to see the panels themselves. But there could be some perks like meeting the stars. Plus I know that if you can't get a ticket for the San Diego Comic Con (the big one), you might as well volunteer.

  36. I normally don't find a lot of white guys hot, but he is yummy :-)

  39. I would have loved to go to the Arrow panel! Amell is awesome. We couldn't make it to Phoenix this year, but we'll be moved to Seattle by next year. It will be our first Comic Con. Super exciting! I definitely want to dress as a female Nightwing. =D

  40. Wow this sounds like sp much fun! I am glad you and your husband had such a great time. ^^

  41. I hear the con in Seattle is really neat. It's fun when there is a big one by where you live. If you do go you have to post pictures of you dressed up!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks! It was great... so much to see and do.

  43. I have to admit, I'm not a big comic fan, but I do love conventions, and all the comic fans I do know are just awesome folks :) I know there was a Con just a few weeks ago here in London and my daughter went with her boyfriend.

  44. I am sure she had a blast at the Con!! I need to find some different Cons to go to other then just comic cons.

I haven't been to a Comic Con but I go to some book and fantasy cons in Boston and have a good time. I;m glad the Dener con was better organized this year and maybe next year will be even better.

    ReplyDelete
  46. A Fantasy Con would be fun too. I have always wanted to go to Dragon Con ( I think it's called). That one looks fun!

  47. I always imagined Matthew Inma to look like how he depicts his persona in his comics... the food-loving, slightly chubby kinda-marathoner!

    ReplyDelete
  48. LOL.. I swear I just spit out some of my drink! I always pictured him different too. When I saw him I was like.. huh. Who knew???
