Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles (2014)- Movie Review

I am a child of the 80s... so of course I love the turtles.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began as a comic book.. and the morphed into a huge pop culture icon. They were toys.. and then finally a cartoon series.  I love the very first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle(TMNT) movie that came out in 1990.  This included  animatronic suits created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.  So of course when this Michael Bay film was made I was quite curious.. and went to see it... waste of money.

I wasn't going to go to this movie, but then curiosity won me over.  I never really liked the new look of the turtles.  Yes they are more realistic and this is probably what they would really look like if they really did exist. I was skeptical about Megan Fox (who actually turned out the be one of the best parts of the film). So I was really on the fence about going. Shredder uses a robot skin.. that also turned out to be a good thing.  But the film feel completely flat.

The action scenes and the CGI were of course spot on.  It is Michael Bay after-all.  This though made me feel like I was watching a Transformer movie. Though sounds.. the camera shots were totally Transformers with turtles.  This sells though.  I don't think these types of movies translates well from theater to home TVs (unless you happen to have a home theater). I am going to say what I have seen a lot of reviewers saying and it's true.  This movie isn't terrible.  It's just boring.  I maybe laughed 2 or 3 times.  TMNT is supposed to be funny.  They did try to have the turtle Michelangelo be the comedian he just was a little..corny.

I almost didn't do a review on the movie because it is hard to do a completely negative review.  I am glad I went to my theater's cheap Tuesday price day to watch this.  I do think some fans will find this film satisfying to them..  I tend to love everything the Rock does even if it's a flop.  I am still surprised Michael Bay brought Megan Fox back into his films after she bashed Transformers and he swore to never work with her again.  Of course there is going to be a second film already.  Sometimes one is enough.. but this is a movie out to simply just make money.  C-

  1. I also grew up with the Turtles-I had their sheet set, lol. Bummer to hear that the new movie was sucky-we'll wait to rent it from Redbox for $1.59 :p

  2. I went with my husband on tuesday (our cheap theater day too) because I was trying to be nice, even though I had never seen anything turtle related (he grew up loving them). It was a little bit agonizingly bad, but I figure it was my nice gesture for him for the week, haha

  3. I loved the Turtles too when I was a kid, but I'll probably wait for this one on DVD. Great review!

  4. Old school cartoon to CGI characters don't seem to work well, but the films continue to be made. I think it's because we fans always hold out hope. We go see the movie, even if we're reasonably certain that it will be terrible. And it's such a shame. Thanks for saving me the trouble of seeing it and boring my friends with my rantings about how bad it was.

  6. Did he like it? I am curious? I know a couple of fanboys of the turtles who said it was good. I don't know if we went to the same movie or what?? LOLOLOL! But I'll admit when I am fangirling over something I can love everything they do. I guess they can happen to all of us.

  8. This was totally me. Going to the theater frankly out of curiosity and hope that this was going to be this great Turtles movie. I've been to movies before that the critics panned but yet I loved. I should've listened to my instincts on this one though and just stayed home. LOL!

  9. I remember liking the 1990 TMNT back in the day- it was kinda fun. This one though- yikes sounds like it's not very good. Thanks for warning us! :)

  10. The 1990 TMNT still is strong today. I think it's just that one really has a good story, you like the characters and actually care about them too. This one just didn't get me to connect to it.

  11. He said that he thought it was okay "but too much April". Megan Fox isn't a favorite of his, haha

  12. I loved the turtles when I was younger and frankly, I still find it entertaining. However, I've never watched the "more modern" episodes. I've been sticking to the good ol' show and I don't think this movie will be an exception.

  13. Well I for one appreciate your sacrifice for the greater good. :-)

  14. I have been wanting to watch those new episodes you are talking about. I am curious if the new cartoon is any good though I never made the time for it. I should just to see what it's about. Have you ever read the comics?

  15. No, unfortunately where I live it's hard to find any comics. (Boy, how hard did I try to get The Infernal Devices ones...)

  17. I love TMNT as a child and so I think I was reluctant to see this movie because of that fondness..based on this review I will until it is out on DVD if I see it at all!

  18. Yeah... I just didn't care for it. I was so curious though that I drug myself into the theater. I do know though that I have looked at other reviews and I have seen positive reviews. It's people who are more huge fans of the series that are more forgiving of the film though. So if you fall in that category you might like it.

  19. Ah I am so mixed about this, I want to see it but I really loved the older versions and I don't want to be bummed. Thank you for this review. I will wait until it is out of theaters ...

  20. I'm sorry the movie was a disappointment to you. It's always annoying when a movie misses on most of the things that you loved about the original book/show/movie. I wasn't a TMNT fan -- I was already in college when they first appeared, I think -- but I do remember that the humor was a large part of the appeal. Too bad Michael Bay didn't get that.

  21. I was curious to know what was so bad about this movie (but not enough to go see it!) so I'm glad I read your review! I remember seeing the show when I was younger, but I was never a big fan, so this wasn't a big draw for me. It's sad to me that even though this wasn't that good there's still going to be another movie made. But maybe they'll get a better story and it will be a great movie!

  22. I am glad you liked the review. I do hope though people look around at other reviews because there are some people out there who really did enjoy the movie. So be sure to look around before you decide to go or not go.

  23. I think I was in middle school when the first movie came out. I remember owning the tape and listening to it all the time. I remember watching the second movie too.. but not so much the third movie. I had a video game of the turtles on Nintendo that I really loved. I almost forgot about that game!

  24. Well... this is a money maker movie. So I am really not surprised about there being a second movie. Michael Bay movies sell. Movies really get big too if they can bring kids in to see it. I am hope there is a better script in the next movie. Though I will wait to watch it at home no matter how appealing the trailer looks for it!

  25. I totally didn't know they started as comics. Donatello was always my fave - bookish and brainy, that's the way I like 'em! My daughter said the turtles look like green Voldemorts in this new movie, lmao! I have to agree - the noses freak me out. Sometimes I think Michael Bay should stick to making horror movies instead of ruining my childhood favorites. >.<

  26. When the turtles took off the bandanas they looked.. well scary. But I must say that I guess that technically this is probably more realistic then the turtles we saw in the past. I just have a hard time. They do keep their individual personalities in this movie. So there is that. I don't know. I will probably give it another chance when it comes out on video just to see if I like it. Sometimes I am just not in the mood for a movie similar to sometimes I am not in the mood for a book. So we'll see in the second viewing.

  27. I loved the Turtles when I was a kid also and would race home from school to make sure I was in front of the tv by 4pm to watch them each day. It's a shame that the movie doesn't live up to the way we remember them, especially Michaelangelo, he was such a funny "dude".

  28. I loved Mikey! He was my favorite. Though in the film he was the humor so there was at least that. I now wonder what in the world the next film will be about. Will Shredder be the enemy?? Will we get a new villain??

  29. Totally agree on this. My nephew loved it, though.

  30. I think kids... and fanboys/fangirls who were the main audience did love this movie. They were blinded!!! LOLOL!
