Follow Me Friday

Alison Can Read Feature & Follow

This is the day of the week where we get to know each other better by answering a question devised by our lovely hostesses Parajunkee & Alisoncanread. Sounds like GFC is eventually going away..  so you may want to follow by email or bloglovin/feedly (I love both). And now for this week's question....

Q. How do you handle a book you don't like? Do you DNF or do you power through?

A. I really do try to read everything.. even if it is not good.  That is why all the books that I have ever not finished I made through like 500 pages then quit.  For me I didn't finish Freedom by Franzen, and a Discovery of Witches by Harkness comes to mind.  Though I have been meaning to go back and try a Discovery of Witches again. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood? I also did not finish Lisey's Story by Stephen King!!  Yes I am shocked too... but even my main man King sometimes writes bad books.  Though he has said this is his favorite book out of all his books.  WHY STEVE WHY!!!

 What about you???

  1. I was in the middle of writing my first Follow Friday post and I got my bloglovin email that had yours in it. I like the little Gif, I will have to figure that out someday.

  2. 500 pages? Holy shit...okay, if I were to invest that much time into a book, I'd probably finish. I typically slap my DNF on a book within the first couple of chapters. Once I get to 50%, then I'm committed.

  3. Yeah I usually try powering through a read, but I can't get into it in any way, I have to DNF it.

Sad to hear Discovery of Witches is one that is sort of a DNF for you. I kept thinking I might try that one day!

  4. That happens to me sometimes, if I'm not in the mood to read a book, I usually put it away and come back to read it later. :)

    1. My mood can totally change if I liked a book or not.

  5. Thanks for stopping by my FF. If it doesn't grab my interest, I DNF. Life's too short to force myself into reading something that feels like a chore. I love reading, so won't read something that I'm not interested in.

  6. Hahah, love the gif! I also like to read loads until I just kind of snap, and don't finish reading it. Mostly I try to finish a book, but sometimes, it's just awful. I can't.

  7. Yes, I'll try to power through books I don't like but will DNF if necessary, no matter how far along I am. I'll also try to pick a book back up if I didn't finish since I might not have been in the right mood. That was the case for A Game of Thrones, which is one of my favorites series. Sometimes, you never know and get lucky. Rarely, but sometimes happens. :)

  9. If I start it, I usually try to finish (especially if I get as far in as 500 pages). The busier I get, the more likely I am to DNF, but I can usually tell if it isn't for me fairly soon. Thanks for stopping by this week!

  10. I'm the same way. I rarely DNF because I like to finish things, but sometimes, there's just no other choice. :D Happy Friday!

  11. If a book is really long and I've gotten over halfway through, I'll try to finish it. If not, I won't if it isn't good.

    Happy Friday!

  12. It's hard to make myself give up on a book. Which sucks because it can totally put you in a reading funk if you keep going.

    1. I agree... if I keep going just because they that makes it even worse!

  13. How funny that King's favorite book is the one that you haven't been able to get into. I do think that mood sometimes plays a role in the enjoyment of the book (though I've heard many people say Discovery of Witches wasn't for them). I am better about setting aside books after I've just started them rather than once I'm in the middle. Except audio--it's so much easier for me to stop listening even if I'm more than halfway through.

    1. I haven't quit an audio yet... but that does seem like it would be easier to quit.

  16. I try to finish books even if they're really bad. You never know. One might surprise you. If it is really long and I haven't enjoyed anything by page 400 then I will put the book down. Luckily, I haven't had that happen yet.

  19. It definitely hurts not finishing books but I just don't like to spend my time on something I don't enjoy so I normally try to put it aside and go back to it later to see it I like it any better.

  24. It just dawned on me that you said you couldn't finish Lisey's Story. I hated that book. I did finish it but it took me 6 months to get through it and it is bay far my least favorite book ever. I'm so glad I am not the only one who didn't care for that book.
