Robocop 2014- Movie Review

I was real excited to see Robocop was coming out especially because the actor playing Robocop Joel Kinnaman is an actor I have really enjoyed seeing in the show the Killing.  So to see him in more shows/movies is great.  Here is the description of the new Robocop 2014 :

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years - and it's meant billions for OmniCorp's bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit - is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance to build a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.

I recently re-watched the first Robocop (1987) and enjoyed it.  Honestly I probably haven't seen it since the 90s! I can say for a face that the uniform Robocop wears in the original movie stands the test of time.  Really quite good.  I did like the new better.. yes yes I know.  How could I!  But what I liked about this one is that you get to be more personal and get to know the man Alex Murphy more.  We see his wife and kids in this film.  Also I thought it was pretty neat that we see Robocop without the suit on.  So what his body looks now that he is a robot, or what is left of it I should say.

Of course what I have see as the biggest complaint in reviews is that we don't get to see enough action.  Yes it's true.  The first hour of the movie is just story.  We really don't get to see Robocop in action till the end of the film.  I was never a huge fan of the original film.. so I don't have as many issues with the film as those fans. Robocop's uniform does get a little makeover in this film.  Instead of the silver we are used to, the suit becomes black.  Honestly I love the silver.. and you do see it silver for a little while in the 2014 which is my favorite.

I do wish we would've had a Robocop with an R rating.  The newer film now has a PG13 rating.  I would've liked to see an R rating but I can see them wanting to attract a younger audience.  With the R rating though we could've seen a darker film, similar to the original.  With drugs, and real crime in Detroit. I would give this movie a B. Go out and watch it if you don't care for all the love movies our right now... you'll be in for a good time.

  1. I was just OK with this one. It felt a little generic. But as far remakes goes, it is one of the better one to come out in recent years. Now they've got the back story out of the way, I'll be looking forward to what they do next for the franchise (I'm pretty sure they'll be sequels)

  2. I loved the movie! For me the, the movie had this "what makes us human/machine" concept that I loved.
I had never seen this actor before, though. Did I detect a slight accent? I haven't googled him yet. I'm glad Hollywood is becoming more diverse.

  3. Oh! I forgot to agree with you about this movie being more personal and we getting to see how Robocop came to be.

  4. I agree about remakes that this is a good one. Like Total Recall - fail. Judge Dredd was Ok I guess. It's hard to take these 80s hits and make them into something big. Hopefully the next one will have more action in it and we can see Alex Murphy solve more crimes rather then his own murder.

  5. This actor actually is a foreign actor. He is from Sweden. When I looked at the reports today it is saying this film flopped which is really too bad. I had high hopes for it and was hoping it would be a hit with audiences.

  6. I remember reading Bruce Willis was disappointed with that about the recent Die Hards - the first installment was definitely R-rated and by the time round 4&5 were released, they were making PG13 films (as you said, to attract younger audiences) but missing the grit of the original.

That's a great point about the timing - sounds like the right antidote for those looking to avoid Valentine's Day-themed films!

  9. I know that I've seen the first one, but I honestly don't remember it a lot except that I thought it was a good movie. It wasn't great enough for me to hold on to specifics though. I want to see this one. I do really like action in my movies though so I wonder if this will bother me. I'm not a huge romance fan...and I abhor movie's with the sole purpose of making you cry. I think I would at least enjoy this one if I didn't come out loving it. Thank you so much for the review :D Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  10. I hadn't seen the old one in years and years. So I DVRd it recently. If you like sci-fi and some action be sure to check it out (the first one at least).

  12. I felt the same about the old one. That is why I went ahead and re-watched it. I don't remember the last time I watched it. I don't like movies that make me cry either!! Well maybe Terms of Endearment but that's it. This is why I have avoided the Fault in Our Stars too. No thanks for crying. LOL... so this is why I chose Robocop for my Valentine's date movie.

  13. Is it wrong that I just wish Hollywood would leave my childhood alone?

  14. I actually haven't read FiOS for that very reason. I absolutely LOVE that you chose that as your Valentine's date movie :D Epic. I am going to see the Vampire Academy movie this weekend and I'm really looking forward to 300 Rise of the Empire.
