Armchair BEA - Blogging Horizons and Short Stories

Armchair BEA

Day 3 of Armchair BEA!!  Woot Woot!  I am sure by now we are all seeing the updates from people who are actually at BEA this year.  Today we are talking about expanding our blogging horizons and novellas/short stories.

Expanding Blogging Horizons:
What do you think about when you think about going beyond blogging or expanding your horizons? Is it a redesign of your blog? Have you branched out into freelance writing or even published a novel of your very own? Or, have you moved into a different venue like podcasts or vlogging? This is the day to tell us about how you have expanded on blogging in your own unique way.

What do I think about when I think about going beyond blogging??   For me ... well I guess I haven't really expanded outside of blogging. I do try to think of new features and in June I am going to finally have a new look on the blog after 3 years of blogging.  So that's pretty big for me. Of course all the time I put into blogging I wish I could get paid from it somehow.  But I have read those little ads that bloggers put on the sides of their blogs can cost more then they actually earn. So for now I just make sure that blogging is something I am enjoying.  I have thought about vlogging but then I would have to get all my makeup done and my hair done for every time I want to do one, and maybe I am just too lazy.

Novellas/Short Stories:
Now it is time to give a little love to those little stories in your life. Share your love for your favorite shorts of any form. What is a short story or novella that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves? Recommend to readers what shorts you would recommend they start with. How about listing some short story anthologies based upon genres or authors?

I love books (anthologies) that are full of short stories.  As far as YA short stories I have read Zombies VS Unicorns which I loved.  I also read Geektastic which I didn't like at all.  I love the anthologies that Charlaine Harris edits, like Apple for the Creature.  I am always looking forward to hers every year.

What about you today?  What do you do that goes beyond blogging????

  1. Don't we all wish we were paid for blogging :)

Don't worry about expanding your blogging horizons too much. It would be great if we could to expand, but I think your blog is already bigger than most blogs, you cover a lot of topics -- books, comics, movies, then there's the two book clubs you run. You're pretty inspiring already you know? Your a thousand miles better than the lazy blogger I am! :)

  2. I love Charlaine Harris edited anthologies too. An Apple for the Creature is one of my favorites!

  3. Ah I would love to make money on my 'for fun' hobby of blogging...but I am also not pressing the issue and trying it seems like more hassle than it is worth.

  4. I've actually made some money, like tens of dollars, with Blogher ads. That's more than I can say for most of the ones I tried. Good luck on the new look! I should really make a new header someday.

  5. It would be so nice if we could get paid for blogging wouldn't it? Today's topic is really good.

  6. BAH! Well... it's too bad you don't live by me so we could go to movie openings together. I am always waiting in line hours before and have met a few people that way. We even know the theater manger where we go see movies at because we are there so often.

  7. I've gotten to the point with vlogging that you get what you get. Some days are makeup days, others are not. Not sure if it affects my viewership, but that's TERRIBLE if it does. lol

  8. I heard something about google ads one time. Someone said it's hard to even get approved to have them on your blog. Seriously I don't even feel like trying to do it... is the money worth the effort ??? That is the question.

  9. At first I would've never thought about making money with blogging. But then I realized just how much work goes into it ... and thought man if I got paid for this it would be great!

  10. HAHAHAH!! I have really thought about posting a video. But I just feel like I need to do my hair and what not. Not sure if someone wants to see me in sweat pants and ruff!! I am not much of a booktuber watcher but I am going to go and check out your videos.

  11. I can't wait for the next one! There wasn't one last year but there will be another one this year. So excited!

  12. I agree.... I wonder if anyone will do a post today on how much money they make and how to do ads on a blog???

  13. I think I did one makeup video and one "I just got run over by a truck" video last week, so you have a variety to choose from. LOL I take comfort in the fact that all the viewers can see is shoulders up. Sometimes I'm not even wearing pants. Did I say that?

I need to check out some additional short story anthologies - I've really enjoyed the ones I've read. I personally also really like novellas - particularly the Throne of Glass prequel novellas and The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson.

  15. Find that the blog is a really good way for me to remember everything I read, so I don't mind not getting paid. I'm impressed with you're number of followers- I think a l it of us blog just to know we aren't reading in a vacuum. I've "met" so many great people in the Kidlitosphere, and that's made it worth while as well.

  16. I look at vlogging, too, and it just seems like too much work! But it probably would be fun, too.

  17. I'm just not terribly interested in putting ads on my blog. I like the idea that it's an ad-free zone!

  18. I love that you mention the make-up and getting all dressed for vlogging. I feel exactly the same way. As I'm walking in the door from work, I'm quickly making my way to pajamas and taking off my make-up so this would never work for me :D Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  19. Geektastic looks like a lot of fun. Didn't know Charlene Harris edited anthologies; I'll have to give them a look.

I must say, I'm a total theme-hopper. If my blog looks the same for three *months* in a row, it's a very strange thing. ;)

  20. I'm a fan of anthologies as well. I love getting to experience a bunch of different authors, but still having to give each of them only a small commitment. It's a good way of test driving different writing styles.

  21. I want to try and read more short stories...I like getting the books that have a mix of stories, instead of downloading a novella or something online. I have randomly gotten paid for blogging, and i get a little bit every month from ads, but nothing that would even be close to constituting a job. It would be nice though, I agree, since blogging and all that goes with it is like another job.

  22. I haven't read the Throne of Glass series yet. I have been dying to read it and I have heard other people say how much they like the novellas for that series. I haven't read an anthology for a while and need to find one soon.

  23. Thank you for the compliments. I love to blog too. This past two weeks I have been busy with family and have missed visiting other blogs and getting some reading done and posting done. I too enjoy meeting people.... so much fun. Plus I learn about other books this way.

  24. It would be a lot of work. As I understand that is a whole different community. They have their own ways... so I would have to research all that and start new! Plus as a book blogger whenever someone posts a video I skip it and just want to read what they wrote rather then watch what they say. Sooo we'll see.

  25. I think that I feel the same way. I have been to blogs where there is a big ad at the top and it's distracting. Though Parajunkie is a blog that does a good job on ads. I don't find them distracting at all on her website.

  26. I don't want to get ready just for a vlog. Take an hour to get ready for a 5 minute video. I don't want people to think me vain.. but I wouldn't want to be ruff in a video (I do have exboyfriends out there that might see me! LOL).

  27. I thought Geektastic would be good... you'll have to check out my review to see what I thought of it. It just wasn't that great to me. I wish I was more about theme hopping. But I work so hard on the theme I have (the new one should be up here real soon).

  28. Hahaha! Oh I love that. Too true ;)

  29. I love that too. I have even found new authors through anthologies. Like the Dresden Files for example. I hadn't heard or read them until I read a Dresden short story and then I was sold. Love it.

  30. huh... I might hit you up about ads then and see how you do it. I am curious about it. I have read a few novellas that aren't in anthologies. Sometimes I find that is a way for the author to get more money then in an anthology. So it's probably smarter for an author to do it that way.
