Spiderman 2 - Movie Review

The Amazing Spiderman 2

Well summer movies are here.  I of course went to see Spiderman 2 in IMAX.  Spiderman is not my favorite superhero or superhero movie.  Though I do think that the very first Spiderman with Toby McGuire helped launch the superhero movie fad.  I will say that I have enjoyed the new Spiderman series with Andrew Garfield is better then the Toby McGuire series.

This movie had what I thought was a wonderful love story.  What a great job by the director.  It is a love I think we all wish we had.  I have a feeling some may complain about the focus of the love between Peter and Gwen in the movie but I thought it was a great addition to the film.  I love when a man is so in love he will publicly show it, even with webs.

The action parts of the film were spot on to me.. and the CGI perfect.  Though the music picked for the film did not work for me.  I didn't think it went with the scenes at all.  The main villain Electro was actually a scary villain to me. Rhino the villain makes an appearance too but I am glad his scenes weren't long.  The guy playing the part was soooo annoying (which was the point of that villain) but I don't know if I could've taken an entire movie with that obnoxious character.  Seeing this in 3D IMAX is totally worth it.

While this isn't my most favorite movie ever... I did think the beginning of the film was a little slow while characters were being introduced and the plot was being sorted out.  I still really enjoyed myself and hope there is a third film (last I heard Garfield hasn't signed on).  I give this film a B.

  1. I haven't really caught up with the Spiderman films - I think I've seen the first two, but nothing of the reboot. I am glad you enjoyed this one, but Spiderman isn't my favorite superhero either so I probably won't see this in theater! Although I did catch Andrew Garfield on SNL last weekend and he was really funny! So I am interested in checking out his take on the role.

  2. You know, I am not the biggest fan of superhero movies. But I really liked this one. And I agree with you...the love story between Peter and Gwen kept me engaged throughout the movie. And they definitely could have done without Rhino. What was his purpose?

  3. I actually quite like superhero movies, but Spiderman was never my favorite (I like the darker ones like Batman more). Still I'll probably check this out at some point since I quite liked the first movie :)
And that "I Love You" message in web - lol

I really hope to see this soon. I think Garfield does a great job; he really makes you relate to Peter.

  5. I wonder what Garfield will do after Spiderman? He is pretty cute so I hope to see him in more movies. I saw the SNL clips and loved them. They just need to mix Spiderman with the Avengers where he belongs.

  6. Rhino = ughhh. Thank God he wasn't in the whole movie. I think he is an incredibly annoying. Did you see the extended Xmen clip?? Now that was a complete waste. I thought they were going to mix Spiderman and Xmen but it turns out it was just a contract problem that had come up. Spiderman went with a different director I think and so they had to promote something from the original director who ended up doing Xmen. Such a tease.

  7. I want a man who will write I love you in huge letters for me... a man who will show his love like that and not be ashamed is hard to come by!

  8. I agree. Garfield plays a great Peter Parker. I really like his Spiderman movies better then the McGuire ones.

  9. I'm so glad you've seen this movie and reviewed it. I have heard so many bad reviews about this movie. We tend to have the same taste in comic book movies. Spider-man isn't my favorite hero either but I enjoy the movies. The last one was my favorite.

I may still have to wait for Blu-Ray but I feel much better about seeing this now. Loved your review. It hit on all the points I would review.

  10. The chemistry between Peter and Gwen was great, and there were a lot of elements in the love story that I like. But it did feel a bit like it didn't fit in with the rest of the movie. After nearly a week seeing this, I'm still not sure how I feel about the film as a whole!

  11. Spiderman I always am confused after the movies. Did I like it.. did I not. I liked the love story but you are right... it kind of does not go with the movie. It remind me a little of Superman Returns. Too much plot not enough Superhero. Honestly as the movie progressed and the love story kept going I was like... huh. Then after what happens to Gwen the film flies through to the end. Spiderman just needs to join the Avengers already.

  12. I would say wait for video. I only say that because... well it's not worth the money unless you are going to go to 3D and really see it how it should be seen. 3D prices are through the roof anymore in IMAX. It was $29 for two of us to see this film. That is a *^&^%& of money!!

  13. I'm going this weekend to see it, and so excited! I had the same problem with the music in the 2nd Hobbit. It was a little awkward and in random moments with a bunch of different styles. I saw the web in the trailer and it looks great. Thanks for the review! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  14. Yeah.. the music!! There is a fight seen that the music didn't work to me and then a scene when Peter is in his room and they play a popular song on the radio and it just didn't go with the scene to me.

  15. I was so sad when I finished watching this movie :'(
I sort of knew it was going to happen, but it was still so upsetting to watch! Great movie though. They are such a cute couple =)

  16. After reading some reviews about the movie I discovered Garfield and Stone are in a relationship in real life. I think the chemistry really shows in the movie.

  17. Totally agree that the music just seemed "off" at times. Decent movie though.

  18. Good to know. We have a gift card to the movies and I think my wife would rather see the new Xmen movie anyway. Sounds like this will be good though. I will wait for video, it would be cheaper to buy it when it comes out than go to the theater.

  19. I am so behind on the SpiderMan movies... I saw I think the first Tobey McGuire one, or maybe two of them (were there three?). Spidey was never my favorite hero so I never paid a lot of attention- but I know Gwen is old school so really wondering if that went down like in the famous comic story. I have a feeling something like that did happen, based on stuff I've seen online. Rhino seems silly (I mean , really. Rhino?) Sounds like a fun flick, though!

  20. I think that what happened to Gwen in the movies did happen in the book... MAJOR SPOILER FOR THIS MOVIE: Gwen does die in it. So I don't know where the third movie will go. They pulled Mary Jane's role in this film so I bet she pops up in three.

  22. OK yeah.. that was pretty sad. I will admit after the film does a great love story that I have never seen before in a comic book movie and then she dies!! WHAT!!

  23. I love Spiderman, and I agree with you - I enjoy Andrew Garfield more than I did Tobey Maguire. I didn't see the first one with Andrew Garfield, but I really liked this. I did think it was a little long. And I loved when he hosted SNL! He was fabulous! :)

  24. SNL was so fun to watch. I just read that Garfield signed on to 2 more movies. Soooo I guess either Spiderman will be 4 movies or there will be one more movie and then Spiderman will join the Avengers. We'll see!
