Outlast - Video Game Review

The moment I heard about the game Outlast I knew I HAD to play.  It is an indie game which to me are usually pretty good.  The game was always for PC and at the time I hadn't signed up for Steam because I was lazy and didn't want to put it on my iMac. I do finally have Steam but this game became free on PS4 and I KNEW I would get to play it then.  I was SCARED!  I played it on my home theater with a group of friends (it's about 6 hours long) and we all had such a good time.

OK.. so the point of the game is you go to this Insane Asylum as a reporter.  You want to get to the bottom of these crazy rumors people are saying about the place.  What is crazy though is as soon as you go in your know this place is soooooo scary yet this reporter keeps going (yea right).  Anywho... the place is almost always completely dark and the only way you can see is through the infrared on your camcorder.

Oh and while running around in dark the batteries will run out on your camera ... so you have to look around and find them. The building is full of noises... scary lights... floating bodies.  I just loved it.  I even screamed out a few times.  You aren't able to fight any of the crazies you meet... you must hide and just hope they didn't see you.  Or just run for it.

I would recommend not watching any walkthrough videos before playing.  I might ruin the jump scenes and you don't want to spoil the game for yourself. I even had some friends say that they had watched walkthroughs and weren't going to be scared but still jumped!  So I guess either way you will be OK and still be scared.

There is nothing like playing a video game night with your friends and this is the one.  It is totally worth buying and playing in the dark!  10 out of 10

And if you haven't seen Conan playing this game you must watch!

  3. It was sooo cool. I thought I might dream about the game but we went to bed so late I didn't even dream anything!

  4. I am going to check that game out for sure. I love to learn about games... especially Indie games. I don't like horror movies either but for some reason a horror game is a blast to me!

  5. THIS SOUNDS TERRIFYING! Angela, I'm probably going to be half-freaked out for the rest of the day. Just a moment ago I looked out the window and saw what looked like a person looking through creepily, only to find it was a gazebo/market-stall cover thing, leaning up against it. Terrifying.

Obviously, I would not be able to play a game like this, or any game, in fact, that has a sense of the mildly creepy/scary/unsettling to it, but I'm glad you enjoyed it so much (and am completely horridied that a reporter would do the classic horror movie thing and just keep going when things get creepy). I will look forward to watching the Conan video, because just that picture looks hilarious and exactly like me in such a situation.

  6. Conan's reaction to the game is hilarious!! I love it so much. It was funny... when my friends and I were playing sometimes one of us would yell out and that would scare each other more then the game. We were so freaked out.

I really thought it was a good time, it put a smile on my face and I laughed at myself for being so scared sometimes. The whole reporter going through this place was nuts. Then when he drops his camera and you have to go looking for it in the dark! Now that was scary!

  7. You'll have to tell me if you like it, if you play it. It's short but I went through it slow, I just thought it was sooooo beautiful. I like indie games as well, because they tend to make puzzle adventure games which are my favorite. Have you been to DigiPen.com? They are students that make games and you can play them for free. Perspective ~ http://www.seewithperspective.com ~ was my favorite, soooooo much fun.

  8. I went to that site. Looks like the games are for PC only (which mean no Macs). That's OK for me because luckily I have parallels. So fun to find out so much about indie games that I didn't know about before.

  9. Okay, I'm going to watch it now and am already half-laughing!

By the way, I don't think I've said before but I love this type of review, where you review video games- your blog is so versatile and while I don't play all that many games, I want to play Oblivion now, thanks to you, so... go you, Angela!

  10. Thank you!!! I find that I have more fun on the blog if I don't just blog about books but other things I am interested in. Movies, video games, comics. I have though about blogging about TV too since I love some shows but never got around to doing that.

  11. This looks horrifying!! I don't know how you can play such things. Read about it, maybe. But watch/play a game in such a scary setting? NONONONONONONOONONO

It would be funny to watch someone else play though XD

  12. Oh, I'd love to see you do some tv series reviews- I can imagine you'd introduce me to a load of new things, along the way, and I think that would be a really fun type of review by you! Have you watched Firefly?

  13. This game looks amazing. This makes me wish I was a big gamer again. I would love to stay up late playing this with all the lights out and then have nightmares for a few days after. Great review, you're making me want to up grade my game system from my PS2. :-)

  14. That sounds like so much fun, playing this game with a group of friends. I'd love it! The parts where you have to hide and hope you aren't found sound the scariest! Back in December for my daughter's birthday, we took her to Dave & Buster's. We sat in a booth and played a zombie video game, and you wore 3-D glasses. There were curtains to block out light coming in. It was so fun!! We were both screaming our heads off! :D

I wish I could get my husband a PS4. Our PS3 sounds like a helicopter taking off sometimes, lol. I'm sure we'll get a PS4 one day, but I wish it could be today! ;)

  15. My friends and I all took turns with the controller. There were some parts that were scary and I just couldn't beat it so I passed the controller to the next person. Honestly it was super fun! There were some parts that you could tell it was an indie game. Like they ran out of money or something. LOL... but who cares right?? If it's fun then it's worth it.

  16. This was actually a fun and unique game. It reminded me of playing the first Silent Hill game. That game scared me to death. You should be able to find that one for PS2 if you haven't played it before.

  17. Shcokingly... I have NOT watched Firefly. I have seen the movie but not the show though I hear everyone loves it so much. I need to watch that one!

  18. I agree - that would be the best date ever!! That place is fun for all ages! Those zombies were coming out of the screen at us, and it's so satisfying to use that gun to kill them. It vibrates like it's a machine gun!

I didn't think about sales. That is a GREAT sale! $100 off! The PS4 doesn't play PS3 games, right? That means I'll have to buy Final Fantasy XIII parts one and two if our PS3 bites the dust. :D My husband's playing Saint's Row lately, and I'm an FF girl all the way. I really want Outlast, too.

  19. I love FF too. You are right, the PS4 does not play PS3 games. Which really irks me. So of course we are always changing around systems to play different games. Are you guys on PS network or whatever they call it? Downloading the free games? That's how I got Outlast. It was a free game in March.

  20. Yeah, I think we are on the network. That's cool it was free. It looks like a pretty bad ass game.

  21. I have played some of the Silent Hill games and I loved them. I will have to look around and see if I can find the ones I haven't played for PS2. Thanks for reminding me about those.

  22. You definitely do! I cannot recommend it enough- cowboys and spaceships and humor and wit and so much more... it's quite incredible. I didn't like the movie all that much, sadly, it seemed like it went a very different way to the series (the dialouge and characters all felt a little... changed), but as I say, the series I cannot recommend enough. I think you'd really enjoy it.
